| Carrazeda de Ansiães
Located in the centre of «Terra Quente» (Hot Land), Carrazeda de Ansiães counts with over 8.000 inhabitants and is also warm and generous due to its wine. The Douro River and the mountain continue to dominate the strong landscape, many times quite steep and where vineyards contrast with granite plateaux that seem to be planted with rocks. Dolmens, rock painting, nice rural houses and rich manor houses, naive churches or finished examples of style, as it is the case of the Romanesque Chapel of Belver and of the S. João and S. Salvador churches that are all clear signs of the past of Humankind. The «Zíngaros» (previously called «Zé-Pereiras» - gipsies) are symbols of the local folk music, a constant presence in the festivities and already known in some foreign countries. Chestnuts, apple and orange trees as well as almond trees and the honest hospitality of its people together with unique smoked ham and sausages await the visitor. As far as handicraft is concerned, the main references are the Sacred Art wood images that have already travelled around the world, the works of the sculptor António Benigno Catarino. The well-known spa village of S. Lourenço and Sra. Da Ribeira, next to the river, are places to visit and enjoy, wandering the Douro Route through paths where the true treasure of this municipality is its landscape. |
