This settlement preserves remains of several civilizations ? Celt fortresses (?castros?), Roman remains and old monasteries; churches, medieval pillories and manor houses. All this having as a background the amazing landscape delineated by the Douro River and by the mountain.

Not far from Bai?o, in Sta. Cruz do Douro, the author and poet E?a de Queir?z looked for inspiration to write the famous book ?A Cidade e as Serras? (The City and the Mountains), in the famous Tormes House.

The wine from Bai?o is ?smart and sappy?, pairs well with roasted kid and the famous broad beans rice and fried chicken, Teixeira cake, cousin?s cake and ?cavacas? (traditional sugar glazed cookies).

Interesting handicraft with highlight to its beautiful walking sticks in cherry wood and some of them with refined details in wood or tin.
