The access quay to the famous Alpendurada Monastery located in the parish with the same name and established in the 11th century by the Benedictine Order of S. Jo?o Baptista de Alpendurada. Currently the monastery belongs to a business man from Northern Portugal that has been investing in the property and has transformed it in what is a hotel with a conservative image.

The Bitetos Quay is located in a region where granite predominates and the stone extracted is exported mainly to Northern Europe and used also in the construction of most of the local houses giving to the region a peculiarly rustic aspect while it promotes its own development.

Not far from Alpendura was born Carmen Miranda (in Marco de Canaveses), who when still a child left to Brazil and later, already in the USA, in Hollywood, became famous.
The Vinho Verde, world-wide famous, grown mainly in the Portuguese Minho Region, is an important part of the local production and economy besides granite.
Bitetos and its quay belongs to a considerable number of other docking quays that are located along the Douro River and that allow us to step on wine growing and schist soils, reminding at the same time that from them departed the traditional Rabelo boats to the cities of Oporto or Gaia loaded with casks of Port Wine or were there built or repaired, being used also by the skilled sailors to overnight.

In the gastronomy, pork leg and veal with potatoes, rice and a special flavour to firewood, roasted in granite ovens, are enough reasons not to forget this parish and the meal at the Monastery, as it is included in program of many of our cruises.
