Castelo de Paiva

Castelo de Paiva was the birth place of our St. Anthony of Lisbon, as his parents came from Godim and Vegido, places that are part of the municipality.
This territory of the Paiva and Douro Rivers with 17.000 inhabitants, mostly rural and important in the past due to the coal mining in the Pej?o mines, has been through a strong industrialization over the past years. New and modern production plants have appeared standing out the investments in the shoe, textile, wood and leather goods areas that have brought progress and employment to the region.

From the Sardoura Quay granite is shipped to Northern Europe.
Keeping alive traditions there are leisure activities in Castelo de Paiva that through music bands and several folk groups show the culture and entertainment.

The Paiva River and its turbulent waters allow the practice of water sports and in mountain areas there are ideal conditions for the practice of off-road.
As main viewpoint stands out the S. Domingos Mountain with an amazing view over the Douro and Arda Rivers and on the top a landmark at the tourism and religious levels.
Besides the old threshing floors and granaries, the architecture heritage based on the 1700s styles.
As far as the regional handicraft is concerned highlight for the hand work in copper and a rich and diversified cuisine that includes lamprey?s rice, oven roasted shad both accompanied by the red Vinho Verde from Castelo de Paiva, one of the best of the Demarcated Region having received several awards in the last years.
